The Kindle is actually quite classy; it's like a convergence of old school and new school technology

$29/month is too rich for my life-style, and I suspect a lot of people. Lower it to $29/year and perhaps I would consider it. I have a library card from my state (Minnesota's) biggest county library system. It gives access to thousands of books (even more through their inter-library loan system), perhaps causing me to wait a bit for some of the more popular ones, but overall extremely inexpensive. Overall the system has to be cheap enough to over-come my current financial outlay, which is basically the gas to drive 3 miles (round-trip) once per week (my kids borrow the most books). In fact, I probably pay more in fines than I do in transportation costs.
